House Democratic Leadership Issues Statement on Pending Retirement of Senate President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola

January 15, 2026

DOVER- House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown, House Majority Leader Kerri Evelyn Harris, and House Majority Whip Ed Osienski issued a joint statement Thursday regarding Senate President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola’s announcement that he plans to retire at the end of his current term:

“On behalf of the House Majority Caucus, we thank Senate President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola for his decades of service to the people of Delaware.

“Since he was first elected to the Senate in 1990, Sen. Sokola has seen our state through tremendous changes, and through it all, he’s been a steady, thoughtful, and tireless advocate for Delawareans. He has worked to strengthen our schools, protect our environment, and keep our state budget balanced, always with an eye toward what’s best for the people he serves.

“Over more than 30 years in the legislature, Sen. Sokola played an incredibly central role in shaping some of Delaware’s most consequential policies, including marriage equality, education reform, and commonsense gun safety laws. His leadership helped move our state forward and has left a lasting impact on all Delawareans.

“We are grateful to have worked alongside Sen. Sokola and thankful for his leadership, his partnership, and his friendship. We wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement and thank him for a legacy of public service that will be felt for generations to come.”
