Alonna Berry

Alonna Berry’s roots run deep in Sussex County, where her family has lived and served for generations. She comes from a proud line of Delaware educators — trailblazers who taught in one-room schoolhouses and played a role in integrating local schools, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and equitable future.

That legacy of service and progress is what fuels Alonna’s work today. Her career has always been rooted in one simple goal: making life better for Delaware families like her own. A mom, a neighbor, and a lifelong public servant, Alonna brings both heart and hands-on experience to the work of strengthening our communities. She served in the Office of Governor John Carney as Director of Community and Family Services and later as Senior Policy Advisor for Health, Equity, and Education—roles where she helped shape statewide policies to better support schools, improve health outcomes, and ensure families have access to the tools they need to thrive. Alonna also broke new ground as Delaware’s first Statewide Trauma-Informed Care Coordinator, building partnerships across agencies to ensure our systems respond with compassion to children and families navigating tough times.

It’s the same spirit she carries into her role as Executive Director of the Delaware Center for Justice, where she drives reforms that make our justice system fairer and our neighborhoods safer through restorative, community-based solutions. And it’s what inspired her to launch the Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence in Georgetown, guiding the school from a bold idea to a thriving service-learning campus that equips young leaders to chase their dreams.

Alonna complements her real-world experience with a strong academic foundation. She is a doctoral candidate at Wilmington University and holds graduate credentials in organizational leadership and innovation from both Wilmington University and the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, where she now serves as President of the Alumni Association Board and as a member of the university’s Board of Trustees. She is also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and serves on several nonprofit boards and statewide councils focused on equity, education, and community development.

With a proven record of bringing people together, driving meaningful change, and putting families first, she’s prepared to be a steady, effective voice for Sussex County—and to help shape a future where every Delawarean has the opportunity to succeed.
