House Democratic Leadership Issues Statement on U.S. Senate Federal Government Shutdown Vote

November 10, 2025

DOVER – In response to Sunday’s U.S Senate government funding vote, House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown, House Majority Leader Kerri Evelyn Harris, and House Majority Whip Ed Osienski issued the following joint statement:

“Last night’s vote in the United States Senate was not just disappointing. It was a betrayal of the American people. Once again, Washington Republicans and Donald Trump have shown they will say and do anything to protect their own power, even if it means lying to the American people and leaving working people to suffer.

“For weeks, federal workers and contractors, our neighbors, friends, and family, have gone without pay while continuing to serve their country. They are struggling to make ends meet, to pay rent, and to put food on the table, all while politicians in Washington play games with their livelihoods.

“Meanwhile, nearly 46,000 Delawareans face the threat of skyrocketing healthcare costs if Affordable Care Act tax credits are not upheld. Without these protections, families could lose their coverage entirely. That is unacceptable.

“We have seen this playbook before. Donald Trump and Washington Republicans have repeatedly gone back on their word, choosing lies over leadership and special interests over the people they serve. This time, eight Senate Democrats broke ranks with the rest of their Democratic colleagues and placed trust in promises that experience has shown to be unreliable. Delaware’s U.S senators knew better. They did not fall for old tactics or empty deals.

“We are grateful to Senator Chris Coons and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester for standing firm and refusing to compromise Delaware families’ healthcare and dignity for hollow promises. Their strength and integrity reflect the best of our state and our shared values.

“Delaware has a strong and united federal delegation fighting for what is right. Here at home, the Delaware House Democratic Caucus stands shoulder to shoulder with them. We are holding the line for Delawareans, for affordable healthcare, and for a government that works for you, your family, and your community.

“To the people of Delaware: do not lose hope. Together, we will endure this difficult moment, defend our values, and move our state and our nation forward.”
