DOVER- Upon learning of former Representative John Viola’s passing, House Democratic Caucus leadership – Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown, Majority Leader Kerri Evelyn Harris, and Majority Whip Ed Osienski – issued the following joint statement:
“Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the passing of our former colleague, John Viola.
“Former State Representative Viola was a dedicated public servant in every sense of the word. Anyone who knew him could see his deep devotion to his community, whether through his time as a volunteer firefighter, his service in the Air Force, or his 22 years in the Delaware House of Representatives, where he also served as House Majority Whip from 2013 to 2017.
“Whether in Legislative Hall or in everyday life, John showed up every day with the same purpose: to help people and make life a little better for others.
“He fought for working families, for better wages, stronger protections, and fairer working conditions for Delawareans. He was a dependable voice for social justice and a steadfast ally to marginalized communities. He was extremely responsive to his constituents, notably turning one issue – a resident with a disability struggling to pump their own gas – into action, crafting a law that has helped countless Delawareans.
“John’s legacy of service and compassion will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with his daughter, former Representative Andria Bennett, and with all of his family, friends, and loved ones.”
